What counts as a plumbing emergency
If it is causing damage, making the property unsafe or leaving you without an essential, call:
- Burst pipe or a leak you cannot stop. Water through a ceiling, a wall or across a timber floor.
- Sewage backing up through the shower, floor waste or toilet. A health hazard that will not clear itself.
- No hot water in winter, especially with kids, elderly residents or tenants in the house.
- Gas smell, inside or near the meter. Urgent every time.
- Flooding. Stormwater coming in, a sub-floor filling up, a lane drain that has stopped taking water.

What to do while we are on the way

1. Isolate the water at the meter. Usually at the front boundary. Turn the tap or lever clockwise until the flow stops. In apartments, look for an isolation valve in the laundry, under the sink or in a fire-hose cupboard.
2. If you smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter valve, open windows and doors, and do not use lighters, switches or anything that sparks. Get everyone outside if the smell is strong.
3. Stay away from electrics near water. Do not touch wet switches, power points or appliances. If water is near the switchboard or coming through a light fitting, leave the power alone and tell us.
4. Stop using the drains if sewage is backing up. Every litre you send down comes back up.
5. Move what you can. Rugs and furniture clear, towels along doorways, photos for insurance if safe.
