Whether you repair or replace, the price turns on the type of system, its size, where it sits, and what current standards require.

Repair usually wins on a newer unit with a common fault, such as a failed thermostat, element, valve or thermocouple. Replacement wins once the cylinder itself is rusted through and leaking, because a leaking tank cannot be repaired. Age, fault type and the cost of parts still available for the model decide it.
We tell you which side of that line your unit sits on before you spend anything.
Three things: what has failed, whether the part is still made for that model, and how hard the unit is to get at. A thermostat on an accessible electric tank is a small job. The same fault on a unit boxed into a cupboard, up on a roof or on a balcony takes longer.
Yes, more than any other factor. Electric storage, gas storage, gas continuous flow and heat pump systems differ in unit price, in the connections they need, and in the labour to install them. Changing from one type to another usually means new pipework, and often new wiring or gas work.
Staying with the same type in the same position is the simplest and cheapest replacement.
Sizing is set by how many people live there and how many bathrooms run at once, not by what happened to be there before. An undersized unit is cheaper on day one and runs out of hot water every evening. An oversized one costs more to buy and to run.
Current standards can require a tempering valve on the hot water outlet, a safe tray and drain where a leak could damage the building, a compliant relief valve line, and clearances around a gas unit. If your old system predates those rules, meeting them is part of the job.
Gas work carries its own requirements. More on our gas fitting page.
Often, yes. It depends on the type and size, whether that unit is in stock, and whether we can physically reach the old one. Call early, tell us the brand and rough age, and we will give you a straight answer about today rather than a hopeful one.
No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.
Rebates and incentives exist for some efficient systems in NSW, and the rules and eligibility change over time. We will not quote you a rebate figure on a web page. Ask us what applies to your address, your household and the system you are considering, and we will tell you what we know.

No, but changing type changes the work. Moving to a different fuel or a heat pump can mean new wiring, a new position, a new base and different clearances, all priced on site.
