Relining builds a new pipe inside your old one. A liner saturated with resin is fed into the damaged drain, pressed against the pipe wall and cured hard in place, sealing cracks and open joints without digging the old pipe out.
The result is a seamless, jointless pipe within a pipe, known in the trade as cured-in-place pipe. It goes in through an existing opening: an inspection shaft, a boundary trap, a stormwater pit or a lifted toilet pan.
For taps, toilets and everyday jobs, see our general plumbing page.
Relining suits a pipe that is cracked, leaking or full of roots but still holds its shape. It is not the fix for a collapsed or back-fallen pipe, and we say so rather than sell a liner that cannot work.
Usually right for: cracked earthenware, roots at the joints, holes and leaks, drains under a driveway, slab or garden, and lines that keep blocking for the same reason.
The wrong answer for: a collapsed section, because a liner needs a host pipe to press against; a line that has lost its fall and holds water, because a liner follows the old grade; and any drain that must be rerouted.
Every reline starts and ends with a camera, and the footage is yours.
1. CCTV inspection. The camera travels the line while you watch, recording length, depth, diameter, material, faults and junctions.
2. Jet blast clean. High-pressure water cuts the roots out and scours the walls, because resin only bonds to a clean pipe.
3. Measure and cut. The liner is cut to the diameter and length of the damaged section: one joint, or the full run to the boundary.
4. Install. It is saturated with resin, inverted or pulled into place, then inflated tight against the host pipe.
5. Cure in place. The resin hardens and the liner becomes the new pipe, with no joints for roots to find.
6. Junction reinstatement. Where a branch line joins, we cut the junction back open so it drains as before.
7. Final camera pass. We run the camera through the finished pipe and hand over the footage.
Most of the relining we do comes down to tree roots in old earthenware sewers. Homes built before the 1970s across the Inner West, St George and the Eastern Suburbs drain through clay pipe with a joint every 600 mm or so.
Ground movement opens those joints and roots follow the moisture in, forming a mat that catches paper and wipes until the line backs up. Jetting cuts the roots out, but the joints stay open, so they return. Relining removes the joints and ends the cycle.
What sits on top of the pipe is usually the reason people choose relining. The work runs through an access point, so the concrete, tiles, lawn or trees above the drain stay put.
That matters most for concrete driveways, lines under a slab, tessellated tile hallways in terraces and paved courtyards, where putting the surface back costs more than opening it up. Where excavation cannot be avoided, we locate the fault and dig one hole.
Every relining job is quoted upfront after a CCTV inspection, because the price depends on what the camera finds.
No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.
Upfront fixed price before any work starts. You only pay for the work we do. What moves the number: the length of the damaged section, its depth, the junctions and bends in the run, the access, and whether a collapsed section has to be excavated first. That is why we do not quote relining over the phone. Interest-free payment through Payright is available on larger jobs.
For full prices and what changes them, see the pipe relining price guide.
If sewage is coming up in the shower or no toilet will flush, the first job is to get the water moving, not to talk about liners. Our emergency plumbers answer after hours too.
We clear the blockage, then camera the line to find out why. If it needs relining, you get the footage and a written price.
Shared sewer lines are the hard part in blocks, semis and duplexes: one failing section, several owners, nobody sure who pays. We locate the fault, then confirm in writing whether it sits inside a lot or on common property.
You get one report the committee can use: footage, stills, the fault position and depth, and a written scope of works.

Questions
Upfront fixed price before any work starts. You only pay for the work we do. The online quote tool gives you a guide price in about a minute; the plumber confirms the exact price on site before touching anything.
A relined pipe is a structural repair designed for decades of service. The manufacturer rates the liner, and our Lifetime Labour Guarantee covers the workmanship, so if our work fails we come back and put it right.
Not on its own. A liner needs a host pipe to press against, so where a section has collapsed we dig one hole, replace that part, then line the rest of the run.
Yes. Stormwater lines crack and take root intrusion the same way sewer lines do, and they can be lined from an existing pit or access point. We camera the line first, because silt hides the fault.
Most domestic relines are finished in a day, from the clean through to the final camera pass. A long run, several junctions or a section needing excavation first can push into a second day.
Often, once you count reinstatement: excavation means rebuilding the driveway, path or garden above the pipe, while relining works from an access point. No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.
Not usually. Relining an existing private sewer or stormwater line is plumbing work, not building work, so a development application is not normally involved. Where a heritage property or Sydney Water asset is affected, we check what approvals apply first.
Yes. We inspect the line with a CCTV drain camera, show you the footage, and give you a fixed price for the fix before we start. You see what we see.
Usually not. Most root damage is fixed by jet blasting and no-dig pipe relining through the existing access points. We only excavate where a section of pipe has collapsed, and you get a fixed price before any digging starts.
