What the plumber does in a kitchen renovation

Two visits do most of it: rough-in while the walls and floor are open, fit-off once the cabinets and benchtop are in.

  • Rough-in. Supply and waste at the sink, a dishwasher point, water lines for a plumbed fridge and filtered tap, gas points for the cooktop and oven, and any drain relocation, set off the cabinet maker's drawing.
  • Fit-off. Sink, tapware, trap and waste, dishwasher and fridge connected, filtered tap and cartridge in, cooktop and oven connected and certified, then a leak check.

To be plain about scope: we do the plumbing and the gas. We do not install cabinetry, benchtops or appliances beyond their plumbing and gas connections. We coordinate with your cabinet maker, stone installer, electrician and builder.

For taps, toilets and everyday jobs, see our general plumbing page.

Moving the sink to an island

Usually possible, and the waste decides it, not the tap: an island sink needs fall to the existing drain, and venting.

Over a timber floor there is normally room to run waste under the joists with fall. A slab means saw cutting or coring concrete, which costs more, and the depth of the drain at the connection point sets what is realistic. We would rather tell you at the site visit than after the joinery is ordered.

Gas cooktops, gas ovens and going induction

Gas work is done in-house by a licensed gas fitter, with a compliance certificate issued when we finish.

A new cooktop rarely sits where the old one did, so the gas point moves with it: a correctly sized run, pressure tested and checked on the flame. Gas ovens are the same exercise. Going induction? We cap the gas point off properly and test it rather than leave it live behind a cabinet, and work in with your electrician.

Dishwashers, plumbed fridges and filtered water taps

Every appliance that takes water gets its own isolation valve, so it can be shut off and serviced without turning off the kitchen.

The dishwasher gets a tap in the next cabinet, a braided hose and a waste connection set to drain cleanly. A plumbed fridge or ice maker needs its line run before the cabinets go in. Filtered taps get a dedicated line, and we put the housing where you can reach the cartridge.

Butler's pantries and laundries in kitchens

A butler's pantry is a second wet area with its own rough-in: supply and waste for the sink, often a second dishwasher point.

Plenty of Sydney kitchens now take the laundry as well: washing machine taps and a waste in the cabinetry, plus a floor waste where the building or the design calls for one.

The sequence with your other trades

Rough-in before the cabinets, fit-off after the stone. Turn up in the wrong order and someone is cutting into new joinery.

The order that works: old kitchen out, rough-in set off the joinery drawing, pressure test, photos of every pipe and gas line before the walls close, cabinets, benchtop installed, then us again for fit-off. You get those photos, so nobody is guessing later what runs behind the splashback. We give your builder dates and we hold them.

Apartments and older homes

Apartment kitchens run to a different rulebook: strata approval before you start, and a shared waste stack you cannot move.

We prepare what committees and building managers ask for. The stack sets how far a unit sink can travel, and we say so before the design is locked. In older terraces and semis the walls are open for the only time in decades, the cheapest moment to replace galvanised pipe and to sort taps that have dripped for years.

Pricing

We do not publish a guide price for kitchen renovation plumbing: it turns on how far the sink moves, what is under your floor and how much new pipework the room needs. You get an itemised written quote after a site visit, priced line by line.

No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.

Upfront fixed price before any work starts. You only pay for the work we do. Interest-free payment through Payright is available for larger renovations. For smaller jobs, our instant quote tool gives a guide price in a minute.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you move my kitchen sink to an island bench?

Usually, yes. The limit is drainage, not the tap: the waste needs fall to the existing drain, plus venting. Over a timber floor we run it under the joists. On a slab it means cutting concrete, which costs more.

Do you install the gas cooktop?

We run and connect the gas, test it and issue a compliance certificate. We do not supply the appliance or cut the benchtop, which is your cabinet maker's and stone installer's part.

Can you disconnect the gas if I am switching to induction?

Yes. A licensed gas fitter caps the point off, tests the line and issues the compliance certificate, so nothing is left live behind a cabinet. Your electrician runs the new circuit for the cooktop.

When does the plumber come during a kitchen renovation?

Twice on most jobs. Rough-in once the old kitchen is out and the walls and floor are open, then fit-off after the cabinets and benchtop are in. We photograph the pipework before it is covered.

Do you install the dishwasher and fridge?

We do their plumbing: the isolation valve, braided hose, dishwasher waste and the water line for a plumbed fridge or ice maker. We do not install the appliance itself. Water and sewer connections need a licensed plumber in NSW.

Do you charge a call-out fee to quote a kitchen renovation?

No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber. A renovation quote starts with a site visit and an itemised written price.

How does your fixed pricing work?

Upfront fixed price before any work starts. You only pay for the work we do. The online quote tool gives you a guide price in about a minute; the plumber confirms the exact price on site before touching anything.

Which areas do you cover?

From our Earlwood base we cover the Inner West, St George, the Sutherland Shire, the Eastern Suburbs and the North Shore, and greater Sydney for larger jobs. Tell us your suburb and we tell you the real travel time.

Do you attend emergencies after hours?

Yes, every night from 6pm to 7am. Call 1300 111 007 and the on-call plumber answers, tells you whether we can get to you tonight, and quotes the after-hours call-out fee before we dispatch. We aim to be on site within 60 minutes for emergencies in the Inner West, St George and the Shire.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. NSW Licence 311287C, $20M public liability insurance, and every job is done or supervised by a licensed plumber. Pink Plumbing was founded in 2017 by Nick, a Sydney plumber with nearly 20 years on the tools; four plumbers, 40+ years of combined experience.

Nick or Julie aim to call you back within 30 minutes, 7am to 6pm seven days. After hours, emergencies go straight to the on-call plumber on 1300 111 007; everything else gets a call from 7am.
