Oyster Bay sits on the peninsula in the Georges River between Como and Jannali, with the streets running down to the water on almost every side. Most of the suburb is on a slope. Part of our Sutherland Shire service area.

Oyster Bay is mainly 1960s and 1970s homes on sloping blocks, a good number of them at or near the waterline, with rebuilds appearing among them.
Long sewer runs at depth. A block that falls to the water means a long, deep run to the main. More pipe, more joints, more chance of roots and cracks, and a slope makes excavation expensive. We camera first and reline where the pipe allows. More on blocked drains.
Salt on the river side. Close to the water, brass fittings, outdoor taps and steel hot water tanks corrode faster than they do a few streets up. Exposure matters more than distance, so we look at where a system actually sits before recommending its replacement.
Stormwater coming downhill. Properties on the fall take runoff from everything above. Broken or undersized stormwater lines deliver it to the footings instead of the system. We trace the whole run rather than treating the wet patch.
Leaks under slabs and suspended floors. Homes of this era mix original pipework with later additions. A slow leak shows up as a water bill or a damp smell long before anything is visible. We pinpoint it with acoustic, thermal and pressure testing before opening anything. See leak detection.
A sewer laid in stages, around fifty years ago. Sutherland Shire Council's minutes record the Water Board starting sewerage works across Oyster Bay area by area from 1969 to 1976, with a carrier sewer in Carina Road and, for the low-level streets near the water, a pumping station. So on many older blocks the private sewer is about fifty years old, often in clay pipe, and plenty of houses here were built before there was a sewer to connect to. Pipes of that age are where cracked joints and root entry begin.
From sea level to sandstone. The suburb runs from the shops on Como Road and Oyster Bay Road, just above sea level, up to its highest streets, with stairways built in the 1930s linking the two. In Caravan Head Bushland Reserve, Sydney sandstone boulders break the surface where the land rises into a steeper hillside. Digging a trench through rock for a sewer repair is slow and costly, so we camera the line and reline the failed length from the access points wherever we can.
Bush close to the pipes. Mangroves line the bay and the reserve's woodland is Sydney red gum, red bloodwood and scribbly gum, so trees are never far from a sewer here. Gum roots go after water, and the loose fill around an old pipe is easier going than rock, so they tend to follow the trench to the joints. A gurgle, a slow shower or a toilet that rises before it drains is the usual first sign.
Big family houses. Census figures from 2021 show 80 per cent of Oyster Bay homes were separate houses and 58 per cent had four or more bedrooms. A big house puts more showers, basins and appliances on one hot water system and one water service, so the plumbing works hardest at the busy times of day, and a replacement unit gets sized to the household as it is now, not to the house as it was built.
Some Oyster Bay properties sit below the sewer main and depend on a pump. There is no gravity backup when one fails, so it becomes urgent fast. We service and replace them, and we will tell you whether the alarm on yours is worth anything.

Questions
Height and distance. Water loses pressure for every metre it climbs and every metre of narrow old pipe it travels through, and Oyster Bay has plenty of both. We measure the pressure at the meter and at the top tap, then fix the real cause: undersized or corroded pipe, a failing valve, or a booster pump where the fall is simply too great.
It can, which is why we camera the line first. If the pipe suits relining we cure a new one inside it through existing access, and the slope stops mattering.

In stages from 1969 to the mid-1970s, going by Sutherland Shire Council's minutes of the Water Board's works. That puts the private sewer on many older blocks at around fifty years old, the age when joints crack and roots find their way in. If a drain has started to gurgle or slow, a camera inspection shows the condition of the whole line, so you fix what has failed rather than guess.
In most cases, yes. We camera the line first, so we know exactly where the break or the roots are, then reline that length from the access points. Digging is the last resort, and if a section truly needs it we tell you before we start, with a fixed price.
Yes. We pressure test the pool lines and the outdoor supply separately, then use acoustic and thermal leak detection to pinpoint where the water is going before anything is dug. Then we repair that spot, not the whole run.
They can. Sydney red gums, bloodwoods and scribbly gums send roots after water, and a weeping joint in an old pipe is exactly what they find. Clearing the roots with the jet blaster brings the drain back; relining the damaged length keeps them out. We show you the camera footage of where they were getting in, and the trees and the bush behind them stay as they are.
It is worth doing. A camera inspection follows the line from the house to the connection and shows cracked joints, roots, sags and any length that has been patched before. On sandstone, a repair that needs digging costs more than it does in soft ground, so it helps to know before you commit to buy. You get the footage and a plain-English summary of what we saw.
