Blocked toilet: what to do first

Stop flushing. A second flush on a blocked pan turns a slow morning into a flooded bathroom.

  • Turn the water off if the bowl is rising. There is a small isolation tap near the cistern.
  • Do not pour chemicals down it. Caustic soda and drain cleaner rarely shift a blockage and leave a hazard in the pan.
  • One careful plunge, with a flanged toilet plunger, not a flat sink cup. If two attempts do nothing, stop.
  • Then call us. Hard plunging on a main line blockage pushes sewage up somewhere else.

For everyday jobs around the house, see our general plumbing page.

Is it the toilet or the sewer line?

Count the fixtures. If the toilet is the only thing playing up, the blockage is local, in the pan or the branch behind it. If the shower, laundry or floor waste gurgles or backs up when you flush, the main line is blocked.

The clearest sign is outside. The overflow relief gully, the grated drain near the house, spills in the garden instead of through your shower. If it surcharges when a toilet is flushed, the line is the problem, not the pan. Ground-floor units and older terraces cop it first.

What blocks Sydney toilets

Wet wipes, ahead of everything else, including the ones sold as flushable.

  • Wipes. They go down and do not break up, then catch on anything rough downstream.
  • Too much paper, particularly in an older pan on a low-flow cistern.
  • Sanitary items, nappies, kids' toys and air fresheners that end up in the trap.
  • Tree roots, common on the clay sewers under Inner West and St George gardens.
  • A broken or sagging pipe, which blocks in the same spot over and over.
  • Low-flow cisterns on old pipework, with less water to move waste along.

How we clear it

We start at the pan and work outwards.

Closet auger. A short, guarded cable that turns through the trap without chipping the porcelain. It clears most paper, wipe and object blockages.

Electric drain machine. Past the pan, a cutting head on a rotating cable opens the line and gets flow back.

CCTV camera. Once water is moving, the camera shows why it stopped: roots, a cracked joint, a sagged section, or wipes. You see the screen.

Jet blaster. High-pressure water for the line itself, scouring the pipe wall and flushing debris out to the main.

Then we tell you what we found, and if the pipe is damaged you see it.

Stopping it happening again

Two things decide whether it comes back: what goes into the pan, and the condition of the pipe underneath.

Three things belong in a toilet: what your body puts there, toilet paper, and water. Everything else goes in the bin, wipes included.

If a toilet blocks two or three times a year, that is the pipe talking. Root cutting buys a season. Pipe relining rebuilds the damaged section from the inside, with no trench through the courtyard, and seals the crack the roots were using.

Emergency: blocked toilet right now

If it is the only toilet in the property, if it is overflowing, or if waste is coming up through a shower, call now. Our emergency plumbers are available after hours across Sydney.

Until we arrive, stop running water in the house. Every litre goes down the same blocked line.

Landlords, property managers and strata

We clear tenants' blocked toilets across Sydney and put the cause in writing, which usually settles who pays.

In NSW a blocked toilet is generally an urgent repair. Where the camera shows wipes, sanitary items or a toy, that points to how the toilet was used. Where it shows roots or a cracked pipe, it sits with the property. We photograph what we find either way.

In strata, the line inside the lot is usually the owner's and the shared line is common property. We work with committees on repeat blockages.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How does your fixed pricing work?

Upfront fixed price before any work starts. You only pay for the work we do. The online quote tool gives you a guide price in about a minute; the plumber confirms the exact price on site before touching anything.

Can I use caustic soda or drain cleaner on a blocked toilet?

No. Caustic products rarely move a toilet blockage, and they sit in the pan as a hazard for the next person and for whoever works on it. They can also damage older pipework. Plunger first, then a plumber.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

Repeat blockages in the same spot usually mean the pipe, not the pan. Tree roots through a cracked joint, or a sagging section, will catch paper every time. A camera inspection tells you which one you have.

Are flushable wipes really flushable?

They go down, which is all the label promises. They do not break up the way toilet paper does, so they catch on anything rough in the line and knit into a mass. Wipes belong in the bin.

Is a blocked toilet an emergency?

It is if it is the only toilet, if it is overflowing, or if waste is backing up through a shower. No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.

What if sewage is coming up the shower drain?

Stop using water in the property and call us. Sewage at a shower or floor waste means the main line is blocked, so everything you run comes back up somewhere. Keep children and pets out of the area.

Who pays for a blocked toilet in a rental?

It depends on the cause, which is why we put the cause in writing. Wipes, sanitary items or a toy in the pan generally points to a tenant cost. Tree roots or a broken pipe sits with the owner.

Is my blocked drain my problem or Sydney Water's?

As a rule, the pipes inside your property boundary up to the connection with the sewer main are the owner's responsibility, and the main itself is Sydney Water's. If several neighbours are blocked at the same time or sewage is surfacing in the street, it is often the main: call Sydney Water on 13 20 90. If it is only your property, call us and we camera the line to show you exactly where the problem is.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.

Do you attend emergencies after hours?

Yes, every night from 6pm to 7am. Call 1300 111 007 and the on-call plumber answers, tells you whether we can get to you tonight, and quotes the after-hours call-out fee before we dispatch. We aim to be on site within 60 minutes for emergencies in the Inner West, St George and the Shire.

Which areas do you cover?

From our Earlwood base we cover the Inner West, St George, the Sutherland Shire, the Eastern Suburbs and the North Shore, and greater Sydney for larger jobs. Tell us your suburb and we tell you the real travel time.
