How a heat pump heats water

It works like a reverse-cycle air conditioner running for your tank: a fan draws outside air across a coil, refrigerant absorbs the heat, a compressor lifts it, and that heat passes into the water.

Because the unit moves heat rather than making it, it uses a fraction of the electricity of a standard electric tank. Sydney's mild winters suit it, and most units carry a small electric booster for cold snaps.

For taps, toilets and everyday jobs, see our general plumbing page.

Is a heat pump right for your home?

For most Sydney homes replacing an electric storage tank, yes. It is not right everywhere, and we will say so.

  • A good fit if you are replacing an electric storage tank, you have rooftop solar, or you have an outdoor spot with real airflow.
  • Think twice if there is no outdoor space, the only spot is under a bedroom window or against a neighbour's, or a big household needs fast recovery over low running costs.

Then gas continuous flow may suit better, and a licensed gas fitter can price both. For every fuel type side by side, see our hot water page.

Placement, noise and neighbours

A heat pump needs an outdoor position with clear air in and out, a condensate drain, and distance from bedrooms and boundaries.

We work to the manufacturer's clearances and never box a unit into a cupboard or sealed corner, where it breathes its own cold air and loses efficiency. Condensate runs to a legal discharge point, and the unit sits on a level slab or a rated bracket.

Integrated units carry the compressor on the tank as one piece, the simplest swap. Split systems put the compressor outside and the tank elsewhere, joined by refrigerant lines, which helps on tight sites and near bedrooms.

Installation day

Most like-for-like electric swaps are done in a day.

We isolate power and water, remove the old tank, set the new system, fit a new tempering valve and relief valve where required, and run the condensate drain. Where the job needs new wiring or a change of circuit, a licensed electrician does that part and we arrange it. We set the timer or solar soak window, fill, commission and test, then hand over the paperwork and warranty registration.

Solar, timers and off-peak

Heat pumps and rooftop solar suit each other: the unit can do its heating run in the middle of the day on power you are already making.

We set the timer at commissioning to suit your tariff. If the old tank ran on a controlled load circuit a heat pump can run there too, but with solar we move the run into daylight.

Repairs and servicing

We repair heat pumps as well as install them: compressor and fan faults, sensor and control errors, valves, anodes, blocked condensate drains and servicing at the maker's interval.

Sensor and control faults are usually worth repairing, as is a valve or anode on a sound tank. Once the cylinder is corroded or an old compressor has failed, a repair is money into a unit that is finished, and we will say so. No hot water at all is a job for our emergency plumbers, after hours too.

Units and strata

Heat pumps do go into apartments, but placement and approvals decide the job.

The usual positions are a balcony, a service cupboard with outdoor airflow or a shared plant area, usually common property, so the owners corporation must approve the install. For blocks converting central plant, we advise on plant room space, airflow, noise and a staged changeover so residents keep hot water.

For landlords and agents, no hot water is an urgent repair under NSW tenancy law, and we supply quotes, photos and paperwork for the file.

Pricing

What you pay turns on the system, where it goes and whether electrical work is needed.

No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.

Upfront fixed price before any work starts. You only pay for the work we do. Interest-free payment through Payright is available for larger replacements. Ask us what rebates currently apply; the programs change, so we check at quote time rather than guess.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hot water repair cost?

Hot water from $218 inc GST, confirmed on site. Replacement of a whole unit is quoted as a fixed price for your unit type and position before any work starts. No call-out fee in business hours.

Do heat pumps work in winter?

Yes. Sydney winters are mild and the cycle keeps pulling heat from the air on our coldest mornings. Efficiency drops as the air gets colder, so most units carry a small electric booster for those days.

Are heat pumps noisy?

They hum like an outdoor air conditioner while the compressor runs, usually a few hours a day. Position decides whether anyone notices, so we keep the unit away from bedroom windows and boundaries.

How long does a heat pump hot water system last?

Comparable to other hot water systems when it is serviced: valves checked, anode inspected where fitted, coil and drain kept clear. We will not put a number of years on it as a guarantee, because water quality, position and workload change that.

Can a heat pump replace my gas hot water?

Yes, but it is a changeover rather than a swap. It needs an outdoor spot with airflow, a power supply and a condensate drain, and the gas line is capped off by a licensed gas fitter.

Do I need an electrician as well as a plumber?

Often, yes. A like-for-like replacement on a suitable existing circuit can be plumbing only. New wiring, a new isolation switch or a move off a controlled load circuit needs a licensed electrician, and we arrange it.

Is there a rebate for a heat pump hot water system in NSW?

NSW runs incentive schemes for replacing an electric storage unit with an efficient heat pump, and the amount depends on your home and the unit. We tell you what applies to your property when we quote, and we never promise a figure we cannot stand behind.

Can I pay a hot water replacement off over time?

Yes. Interest-free payment plans via Payright are available on larger jobs. Ask when you book and we set it up before the work starts.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No call-out fee in business hours. After-hours, weekend and emergency call-outs carry a call-out fee, always quoted upfront before we dispatch a plumber.

Do you attend emergencies after hours?

Yes, every night from 6pm to 7am. Call 1300 111 007 and the on-call plumber answers, tells you whether we can get to you tonight, and quotes the after-hours call-out fee before we dispatch. We aim to be on site within 60 minutes for emergencies in the Inner West, St George and the Shire.

Which areas do you cover?

From our Earlwood base we cover the Inner West, St George, the Sutherland Shire, the Eastern Suburbs and the North Shore, and greater Sydney for larger jobs. Tell us your suburb and we tell you the real travel time.
